Mobiquity Report Reveals Top Mobile Health App Features that help to increase patient engagement.

Mobiquity’s Digital Healthcare Features Radar unveils digital applications that patients encounter on their journey, looking for support.

Mobiquity, a digital consultancy that designs and delivers innovative digital products and services for the world’s leading brands, released today its first digital Healthcare Features Radar, which unveils the most commonly used mobile app features designed to engage and empower people living with chronic conditions. The report uncovers how certain mobile app features engage users in the management of chronic conditions, the apps dominating US and European app stores and the key pillars for implementing a successful digital healthcare solution.

The digital health sector is booming and showing no signs of slowing down. There are now over 350,000 health and wellness apps available to consumers worldwide, with 47% of them focusing on helping people manage chronic diseases (IQVIA, 2021). In an effort to understand how to design patient support solutions, Mobiquity investigated and evaluated the most popular user engagement solutions.

“During the past few years, the healthcare industry has seen a push to redesign the entire conventional healthcare ecosystem, with increasing emphasis on patient centricity, improved patient engagement and improved value-added care delivery,” said Teun Schutte, Strategy Lead Life Sciences & Healthcare at Mobiquity. “Using technology to enhance patient experience involves understanding the patient’s journey, along with all the touch points, frictions and stakeholders involved in each stage of the illness process. Incorporating all of this into an app allows providers to improve healthcare accessibility and empower their patients.”

This report classifies all the features gathered into six distinct dimensions, each representing a key area essential to successful chronic condition management. These include:

  • Health Goals & Motivation – Mobile features that help patients to identify personal health goals, stick to them and stay motivated. They can cover both immediate and long-term goals.
  • Treatment Adherence – Features that promote treatment adherence and compliance, so patients can stay on track with their medication regimen and non-medicated treatments.
  • Behavior Change – Apps that encourage a healthy diet, sleep regimen, physical activity and promote mental health, aiming to achieve sustainable results beyond the effect of medical treatment.
  • Knowledge Building – Solutions that assist patients in building knowledge about the condition and their own health through collecting and analyzing data, offering proven information and actionable advice.
  • Healthcare Professional Support – Tools that build trusted and productive relationships with healthcare teams, streamline communications and information exchange.
  • Social Support – App features that leverage social mechanisms to support patients. This may be centered around app user engagement or may help to engage with friends, family, non-medical experts and supporting organizations.
