A virtual Smartcard has been permitted to be used by staff by NHS Digital making the physical cards’ processes streamlined and giving new staff access to hospital systems. This system is very important as there are thousands of new staff at the new Nightingale Hospitals where staff need to be verified and loaded into new systems quickly.
A centrally procured virtual smartcard solution has been procured by NHS Digital with Isotech. This makes licenses immediately available and ensures that NHS organisations can speedily access new smartcards.
Security has been maintained whilst the verifying process for new users has been streamlined. Remote working and social distancing measures are now possible with a remote verification system by video call.
New and returning members of staff will be able to get onto the systems quickly and efficiently through these measures that now support NHS organisations.
The virtual smart cards will be centrally available for organisations who need the support with their support to COVID-19. The virtual smartcards will reduce contamination risk and provide easier access for staff.
NHS Digital have put measures in place for the distribution of physical smartcards and readers that will still be available to organisations that need them. Bulk printing of smartcards is also available.
Patrick Clark, Programme Director for the COVID-19 Access Logistics Hub at NHS Digital, explains: “With the new virtual smartcards and our increased capacity to rapidly provide large volumes of physical smartcards, we hope to be able to provide the NHS frontline with the systems and services they need to meet the challenge posed by COVID-19.
“Our aim to is to be responsive to the needs of the NHS and social care and to put in place whatever measures possible to reduce their burden.
“We want to ensure that NHS staff don’t have to spend time thinking about things like smartcards or access to systems because the processes are in place to make this as easy as possible.”
